The major economic activities in the district are farming and livestock keeping, 90%0f the people are engaged in Agriculture and other agro-related activities. The 9% of the population is engaged in fishing activities in Lake Rukwa. Crops grown are maize, paddy, beans, finger millet, groundnuts, cassava, sunflower, sorghum, wheat, pigeon peas, cow peas and simsim.
Agriculture department is among the departments in the Council which its major responsibilities are:
VISSION, MISSION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT:
To build an Agricultural department that is highly productive profitable,that utilizes natural resource in an overall sustainable manner in the Council by the year 2025.
To facilitate transformation of the agriculture sector in the Council to modern,commercial and competitive manner in order to ensure food security and povertyalleviation through increased productivity and production of crop products.
To develop an efficient, competitive and profitable agricultural industry that contributes to the improvement of the livelihood of people in the Council and attainment of broad based economic growthand poverty alleviation.
In Sumbawanga District Council, there are two agro ecological zones; the Ufipa Plateau and Lake Rukwa Basin.
